As young as you are right now, it is definitely an impressive tool for you to boost your career since you already have had working experiences.

Do you know that some gap year programs require cover letters for you to qualify for it? It could be in a form of gap year jobs or volunteering, but utmost, these are jobs. According to Employment for Students (E4s), the cover letter that you will prepare is specifically for a gap year placement, also known to be temporary employment. These are extremely important documents according to E4s.

Unless the letter is strong, some employers may not even bother to look at the CV that it accompanies so you must make sure the letter is interesting and informative, they added; that’s why, for a cover letter written for a specific need, there are basic rules you should consider.

The cover letter that you prepare to secure a GAP year placement, or temporary employment, is an extremely important document. Unless the letter is strong, some employers may not even bother to look at the CV that it accompanies so you must make sure the letter is interesting and informative.

There are some basic rules on writing this specific cover letter. Here are the lists:

Should not be longer than one A4 page

The quality of paper and envelope you use is of course very important and should ideally match the CV

It should be typed, not handwritten

It should be signed by hand

When it comes to knowing the types of cover letters applied specifically for gap year, there are actually two to name from: Advert Response Cover Letters and Speculative Cover Letters.

Advert Response Cover Letters

Making this kind of format successfully written, always make sure that you are applying for a gap year placement or temporary job that you are actually suitable for and that matches your own requirements.

Tips taken from E4s again, “be sure to read the advert carefully so that you can address the letter correctly and mark it for the attention of the designated member of staff. You should also include the job title and any reference numbers given – often, companies will be seeking candidates for various positions and will want to see clearly which job is being applied for.”

Speculative Cover Letters

This particular cover letter explains your primary aim that you are only looking for gap year placements or temporary work. “Even though you are not applying for an advertised position, you should try to demonstrate your knowledge of, and interest in, the company you are writing to.” Moreover, address the real name of the person you are writing to instead of simply writing “Sir/Madam”. When it comes to the genera content, it has the same substance as the advert response type.

Working abroad is just few of the dreams of youth today. It’s not like an ordinary employment but you will get to work in resorts, ski, and recreational parks – combining the chances of earning a dime and enjoying the whole work program in a year.

But before the actual work setting, don’t forget that the application process comes first and this area is critical for employment. So making good with your gap year form will give you more chances of getting hired.

Usually, employment on certain gap year job offerings are signed up through online forms. There are things which should be given consideration when signing up an online form. Always check the form for spelling and typing errors. Remember, That a single noticeable mistake might snap away your dream vacation job.

If your employer hands out a paper document, be sure to write legibly and use the same color of pen throughout the form. Also, you might consider passing the form on the same state it was given to you. A completely signed up form will make your employer believe that your a hard working individual. Put N/A to fields which are far related to you – to make an impression that you have read all the items in the form.

Put the best detail forward as possible and skip those less relevant with the position. You can also add up to the items wherein your skills developed at school can be fairly associated. Filling up all the blanks spaces on the form shows that you are fully interested with the job. Make it seem like your signing up the best gap year insurance and you don’t wanna miss a single important field on the form.

Be honest on the information you input on the form. Fibbing will definitely not take you to the top of most applicants and will eventually destroy your reputation once the employer finds out.

It is also wise to make a hard copy of the form and study all the details on it. Your employer might ask you some of the details on the form to test your integrity. Know them by heart and your chances of grabbing that gap year program job will be soaring high.

Adding up a curriculum vitae to support your employment form will be helpful. Just don’t write something like “refer to CV” on the employment form. It sounds like your giving your employer a hard time cracking your details down. Remember that the rejection bin is in the hands of the recruiter and giving them a hard time won’t be much advisable. Just pass a separate CV and it’s up to the recruiters if they take a look. But mostly, employers are hungry for information and they would likely look on the good written CV for more data.

Nobody can tell the outcome of the travel but when you read the article on New York Times located on the job section, you will be surprised how powerful gap year opportunities are.

The article titled “In a Year Off the Beaten Path, a New Direction for Life” tells the story of a junior high school graduate who found her passion after doing volunteer work in Ghana, Africa.

After graduating from junior high school, Lauren Clark, a resident of Maryland wasn’t feeling the urge to take apply for college or take the SAT, however, as a friend advised her to take on a gap year, she did not think twice and fly her way to Ghana.

Lauren Clark spent 4 months volunteering in Ghana while living with a host family in Homabenasi, a rural village. The young Clark taught English and math to middle school students. The volunteer also helped the community with the establishment of a middle school library. Clark wrote over her friend and families back in the United States raising $2,500 – which will be designated for the materials and tools.

Clark managed to get the cooperation of the local villagers which helped them build and furnished the library. Some books were also bought with the use of the money. In return, Lauren had the experience which she little did know – changed her life for the better. Plus she was given a traditional attire which was usually worn by kings and queens of the village.

Lauren found her passion in improving peoples lives and she pursued international development at Tufts University by enrolling into a B.A. in economics and international relations with a minor in Africa in the New World.

It turned out to be a well done gap year of Lauren Clark and she now works in a micro-finance company letting people borrow money in order to start their own business. This is a very good example and prime reason why you should consider taking gap year courses. Just like Lauren, anyone can discover their passions, dreams, and make it realize as well.

Another lesson we can learn from Lauren’s gap year experience, is, the significance of gap year volunteering. It has been mentioned in the article that Lauren got no problem with passing admissions and writing essays with the university. Instead, the university even wrote a personal letter to Lauren regarding her remarkable gap year experience.

Lauren’s family once feared that she may never go to college and get a job if she pursue a gap year travel, but she was determined and she is firing up to get an M.B.A with her new found passion – financial side of global development.

Are you wondering on how to apply or start your gap year travel? What are the necessary requirements in applying for a gap year? Who can help you in the application process?

Gap year applications take time to process and organize travel details. Application processes vary per agency to agency, university to university and country per country. Right after my enrolment for senior year, I went to the Guidance Counseling Office to ask for information on how to apply for gap year travel. The Guidance counselors usually assist students who would take a gap year.

I was handed a list of agency to contact (though some Guidance Office directly handle such inquiries) in which I researched on the internet. Though some of my friends applied on an agency not referred by the school but by family members who went first for gap year.

I was asked to fill or submit form and the following documents:

a.	Recommendations from people who know you.

b.	Transcript of Records from the school.

c.	Application Form

I was then scheduled for an interview. I was asked to complete the following requirements:

d. Statement of Physical condition of the applicant from a physician

e. Housing Questionnaire

f. Personal Pictures and Letter to be given to the host family.

g. Passport Photocopy

h. Emergency Contact List

i. Contract

j. Insurance

k. Program Deposit

l. Housing Waiver

Now, I reminisced the day I finished all of these documents.

I was excited as I carry my papers and purposely stride towards the open door of the agency building I had chosen to help me with my gap year next year. I was still a senior student this school year and I would definitely grab a gap year right after my graduation.

Now, prepared the important documents which had been a big fuss with my family from my younger siblings to my older brothers to my parents and a whole lot of our relatives all over Europe; now finally, I am handing it in to the agency in-charge with great relief and a plastered smile on my face.

The decision to take on a gap year is not an easy one for me. How about to you? What have you been through before your take off for a gap year? How many soul searching night did you have finally say, “Yes” to gap year?
