August 24th, 2008 Posted in Gap Year Activity

Gap year is such a normal thing in Europe that every family prepares for it every year. Though in the US the idea is still something a parent should get used to. Parents cringe in the idea of packing their kids to gap year- to unknown territories and unheard of places. Though famous universities like Harvard and Princeton encourages every student to take a gap year. For these universities correlate the taking of gap year with finishing a four-year degree.

The universities have a strong belief that students take gap year they have a higher percentage of finishing off college in five years time. The university tries to convince parents that the battle has not been won yet when they get their kids enrolled in college for four years of study is still at stake.

Exposing them to the harsh realities in life outside a very secure family and strong country and let them see the helplessness in fellow human beings can make them love the bounty that they have; thus work very hard to nurture such gifts. Here are some worthy gap year destination to consider.

  • Kenya- this country in Africa is the best place to go if you wanted to spend your gap year with the less fortunate people. Indeed, finding out that being white and so blessed is not the major requirement to enjoy life. Work with the street children in Kenya and fell in love with little black kids as they smile their way through your hearts.
  • USA- Maybe you are thinking that can only be done halfway across the globe; then let me correct such misconception. There are also humble jobs for our high school graduates around the USA. One can work as deck hands in fleets in Baltimore. Just screen the place for gap year jobs.
  • Mongolia- A country in east central Asia. I agree when they say the least visited place. Yet, get involve socially with less fortunate children as they struggle to give life the best shot they ever could.
  • Spain- the Spanish land is always an enchantment to every gap year students. Get involve with organization that helps Third world countries. This country is so much involve with world social development that organizations abound in this area.
