My Choice of Gap Year… Is It Yours?
September 11th, 2009 Posted in Gap year ProgramThe economic climate is one reason of the decrease of number of teens going on a gap year. The expensive ticket to have a glimpse of developing countries seems to be so high for parents and students. Yet, still the number is great for those who are crossing borders for their gap year.
For a great gap year, you should consider your gap year program and the persons behind it. For the program will define what is good and not on your travel. I was lucky to land on a very good one and get a very meaningful gap year. The agency that handled me also handles gap year for the not so young ones.
At first I was aiming at landing on a gap year job yet thought that it might be best if this time I will just go for fun, experience and charity. And I also decided to take a different route and head of to the country I wanted to explore- Spain. Most gappers will go directly to the thirds world countries and spend a half hearted gap year. For me, I had my gap year planned. I wanted to know the Spanish culture and at the same time help in any way I can.
So I sign up on a website for exchange services. A free board and lodging in exchange of work. So I inquired on a teaching English work requirements and was happy to find one. I spent half day teaching students on the basic of the English language and grammar and half day hitting the beaches nearby or frequenting the museums if not the tapa bar.
I feel satisfied helping others learn my language and at the same time learn theirs. The four hours of tutorial actually fly away fast for it does not feel anything near like a classroom setting but playing. It is full of laughter and light bantering and language exchange.
The students involve in the language learning actually became my tour guides and leading me to places that they love and I came to love. Introducing me to delicacies and restaurants that I would remember in my life.
It was a far more thorough travel and gap year anyone will experience.
