This country is in the top 10 of popular GAP year destinations for many different reasons. France has many things to offer for anyone. The French gave the world perfume, baguettes, champagne and camembert. It is one of the only countries in the world that manages a perfect balance between progressive and traditional. The culture of France is chic, traditional and stylish. The leading city for all these aspects is Paris, the capital of the republic. Once you visit Paris, you will most likely fall in love with it. Paris is the number one reason why people choose France as their Gap year destination.
The country is the most visited one in the world. It has great cities, the best wine, more monuments than any other country and living is not over priced. Where the north of the country is famous for the capital Paris, France has some great skiing and leisure centres in the south of the country. The east offers lovely landscapes with rolling hills covered with wine farms while the west has a coastline which is popular for summer holidays. It has great beaches and a pleasant climate. The remains of the invasion of Normandy are still visible and form a well-visited tourist attraction.
One of the barriers for going on a GAP year to France is the language. The French are not famous for their English. The younger people will understand some English but don’t expect to have heavy conversations. At the other hand, France is an excellent country to expand your French skills. A lot of people that studied French are choosing the country as their GAP year destination. The lack of English speaking people also opens a lot of GAP year jobs opportunities. A popular one is teaching English to either kids or adults in one of the beautiful French cities.
If you are interested in having a France GAP year in the Agriculture section, you should go to the eastern part of France. There are a couple of beautiful cities lying in the hills such as Nancy and Metz. During your France GAP year you will be able to enjoy the burgundy lifestyle in these regions. The eastern part is also the main wine area in France. The wine fields are numerous, lying up against the hills to catch most of the sun. This France Gap year destination ensures a quiet, relaxing stay in a beautiful landscape.
Another interesting GAP job in France is to join one of the volunteer work camps. These volunteer work camps include teaching, working with refugees and/or children, renovation and construction works.
In central France are several renovation and construction works available. The country has a rich history and there are lots of villages with old historical buildings that need to be renovated. During the Second World War a lot of villages where destroyed and didn’t had the funding to rebuild everything. Especially in the south and centre of the country the life standard isn’t that high. These areas are still looking for volunteers that want to help renovating buildings. You will work in groups from 10 to 15 people from all over the world. You attend training in how to use your tools. The renovation projects receive funding from the government which makes them relatively cheap for the France GAP year travellers. A 2-4 weeks program will cost you between €150 and €400. This includes everything: food, trips, transport on location, accommodation etc.
Within the different sort of GAP jobs there are several functions and work places available. These are just a couple of examples of GAP Year job offers in France.
