Gap Year Travel Destinations >> Gap Year Ghana

Another popular GAP year Africa destination is Ghana. It is bordered to the north with Burkina Fasso, in the west with the Ivory Coast and in the east by Togo. This of course leaves the south to be the coastline.

There are several reasons why Ghana is a popular GAP year destination. First of all, the people of Ghana are probably the friendliest people in Africa. They enjoy the simple things in life and are very laidback. The political status is stable and the people are satisfied. They don’t need a lot to be happy and the country is rich of Gold. This environment made the people of Ghana a relaxed and friendly population.

Gap Year GhanaAnother reason why Ghana GAP year destinations are so popular is the language. The country was colonized by the British and so the official language became English. The third reason to choose Ghana is because it’s a really cheap country to live. Food and drinks are extremely cheap and the bars and restaurants provide excellent food. It is easy, cheap and fun to try the local dishes.

People looking for a GAP year destination in Africa are often scared off by the high crime rate. Ghana is currently a very safe and stable country, especially compared to other African countries. Of course you shouldn’t be careless but in general it’s safe.

Within Ghana there are several types of GAP year jobs available. A very popular one is teaching English in local schools. This type of GAP jobs is available throughout the whole country; which makes it very interesting because you can choose to stay in a big city or in a rural area surrounded by rainforest. In some schools you will also be able to teach other classes than English. You don’t need teaching experience, just a basic knowledge in the subject you want to teach.

A Ghana GAP job which is very popular is being a sports instructor. The people of Ghana are mad about football, they absolutely love it! If you have some football skills and are looking a chance to making children happy in a beautiful African country, Ghana is where you need to go. The children enjoy playing football and are eager to learn.

If you are not sure about which GAP job you would like to attend. There is one job that combines a lot of the different jobs. There are a couple of large refugee camps for Liberian refugees in Ghana. Working in these camps is different every day. You will teach, be a sports instructor, a hospitality worker and much more. The advantage of this Ghana GAP year job is that every day will be completely different. You will gain a lot of experience in different fields.

Despite of the fact that Ghana has been the most successful British colony and the land is rich with gold, the people are poor. Don’t expect to find a well developed European colony. While the government has enough resources the people are still poor. That is why the people of Ghana highly appreciate and respect the volunteers.

Within the different sort of GAP jobs there are several functions and work places available. These are just a couple of examples of GAP Year job offers in Ghana
