Tanzania used to be a colony of Britain but became an independent country in 1961. Since their independence the English language has deteriorated and the native language called Swahili has become the dominating one. The language could be a barrier in some rural areas. But in the cities it’s most likely that English will be spoken well.
The country is a popular GAP year destination because of its safety. African countries suffer a lot under the civil wars. Tanzania is a political stable country, considering that most of their neighbours have a lot of trouble containing the struggles in the area. Another reason is its natural beauty. There are several attractions which make the country interesting for GAP year travellers. Tanzania is the home of the highest peak of Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro. Near the mountain is the second biggest Lake in the world, called Lake Victoria.
One of the biggest attractions of a GAP year Tanzania is the Islands group near the East Coast of the country. The clear blue sea and coral reefs around the Islands of Zanzibar are the perfect place to spend your day of. There are several tourist attractions like snorkelling, fishing and water sports.
The largest city lies at the Eastern Coast and is called Dar es Salaam. It used to be the capital but that honour has now moved to the city Dodoma. Dar es Salaam still is the biggest city of Tanzania and has a stronger economic environment, which has grown strong due to its geographical position. Dar es Salaam is the most popular GAP year destination in Tanzania because it is the countries biggest commercial centre. Dodoma enjoys more attention now that it became the capital. The city lies in an important rural area of Tanzania. Just outside the city there are wine fields as far as man can see. The city also has a lot of GAP year job offers which involve orphans.
Tanzania has a couple of large cities, but the majority of the country is a big open plain. The open area is host to a big number of large mammals. Tanzania has one of the biggest wildlife collections in the world. They preserve their national pride in the enormous wildlife parks such as the Seronera Wildlife Park. Attending an original African safari takes you on a ride along lions, elephants, antelopes and cheetahs.
The country of Tanzania is in need of awareness GAP volunteers. One of the biggest problems in this East African country is the population growth. Currently it has a population of 38 million. With the current growing percentage, the population is estimated to be 88 million in 2050. A lot of people gather in and around the cities to search for a job. The big cities of Tanzania such as Dar es Salaam and Dodoma are already vercrowded.
If you join as a GAP awareness project, you will be doing presentations in front of young adults and adults, raising the awareness of birth prevention. If Tanzania continuous growing at this speed, the results will be pollution, hunger and crime.
